SRINAGAR — Bad weather has plunged orchardists in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district into desperation as the crop has been severely damaged due to intermittent hail and windstorms.
The devastating hailstorm has resulted in damage to crops and vegetables and apple orchards in Rajpora, Abhama, Bagh Sangerwani, Drakladan, Achgoza, and Drabgam areas of Pulwama district. However, assessment of the total damage was not known immediately.
“This year, we expected a good crop as our orchards seemed to be abundant in apples, but the hail and windstorms have not only dashed our hopes, but also left the orchardists in desperation,” said Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Drakladan village.
Eyewitnesses said that the hailstorm has inflicted heavy damage on crops like apple, cherry, rice saplings and other vegetables and fruits.
The locals have demanded adequate compensation from the government for their losses.
