Unidentified militant killed in south Kashmir gunbattle

SRINAGAR — Security forces shot dead an unidentified militant in an ongoing operation in Awantipora sub-district of south Kashmir.

Police said a gunbattle erupted in the early hours on Thursday at Nader Tral during a cordon-and-search operation, which was launched following an input about militants’ presence.

“One terrorist has been killed,” said a senior police officer. “The operation is going on,” he added.

Earlier, in a post on X, police said an encounter broke out at Nader, Tral area of Awantipora.

This is the second gunbattle in South Kashmir since Tuesday. On May 13, three local militants of Lashkar-e-Taiba were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district. The slain also included Shahid Kuttay, a local commander of the Lashkar.
