Weatherman predicts two-day wet spell from Saturday

SRINAGAR — The weatherman on Monday predicted heavy snow and rainfall in higher reaches from November 14, saying that the weather conditions would likely lead to temporary disruption of air and surface transportation, mainly on Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh highways as well as the Mughal road and other major roads.

Deputy Director Meteorological department (MeT), Mukhtar Ahmad said that there is possibility of light to moderate snow and rainfall in plains of Jammu and Kashmir from November 14-15.

He added that the higher reaches of J&K would also receive heavy rain or snowfall in between the two days from the intervening night of 13-14 November.

Ahmad also stated that the weather conditions would start improving from November 15 late evening, but the weather would remain cloudy on November 16 as well.

Meanwhile, the MeT here issued a weather advisory in which it stated that the weather conditions from November 14 may lead to temporary disruption of air and surface transportation mainly on Jammu-Srinagar, Srinagar-Leh Highways, Mughal road and other major roads.

“An active Western Disturbance is most likely to affect the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and adjoining areas from 13 (evening) to 15 (late night) November 2020,” it said.

It added that under the influence of this weather system, widespread moderate rain/snow is expected in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions. Light rains and snow would commence at a few places of Kashmir on 13 (night) and thereafter increase in intensity & distribution with its peak during November 14 & 15 and gradual decrease thereafter.

“Main activity of this system, moderate to heavy rain and snow at isolated places is most likely during November 14 & 15. The system is likely to cause heavy rain/snow mainly in upper reaches of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Baramulla, Bandipora (Gurez and Tulail Valley) and Kupwara (Karnah sector), Shopian, Qazigund-Banihal, Pir Panjal range of Jammu division, Drass (Gumri & Minamarg) and Zanskar subdivision of Ladakh UT,” it added.

In its advisory, the MeT said that probable impacts would be that this may lead to temporary disruption of air and surface transportation mainly on Jammu-Srinagar/Srinagar-Leh National Highway, Mughal road and other major roads, landslides and shooting stones in vulnerable spots of Jammu-Srinagar, Srinagar-Leh National Highway, may disrupt agricultural operations like apple harvesting and orchard management and also dip in day temperature and slight increase in night temperature.
