Western Disturbance to bring rain, snow to J&K over next 24 hours

MeT forecasts light rain and snowfall in higher reaches from October 6 to 8, with a more active spell likely on October 9 and 10

SRINAGAR — Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness a fresh spell of rain and snowfall over the next 24 hours under the influence of a Western Disturbance, with thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds also possible at some places.

According to Kashmir Weather, an independent weather forecaster based in Kashmir, thundershowers are likely at some places in the plains, while snowfall is possible over the extreme higher reaches.

The forecaster said temperatures had remained significantly above normal during the last few days and that hailstorms and gusty winds could not be ruled out at a few places.

The Meteorological Department, Srinagar, has also forecast a spell of unsettled weather beginning October 6, particularly over the higher reaches.

From October 6 to 8, partly to generally cloudy weather is expected, with light rain at a few places and light snowfall over the higher reaches. Thunder and gusty winds are also likely during the period.

The weather activity is expected to become more pronounced on October 9 and 10, when generally cloudy skies are likely along with light to moderate rain at scattered to many places and light snowfall over the higher reaches. Thunder and gusty winds are also forecast.

Partly cloudy weather is expected to prevail from October 11 to 14, according to the MeT forecast.

The fresh weather spell comes after several days of above-normal temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir.
