Srinagar: A youth was killed in government forces action at Anantnag district of south Kashmir on Saturday morning.

Official sources told GNS that police and paramilitary CRPF resorted to use of force, resulting into injuries to a number of youth at Ashijipora and its adjoining areas.

The protests and clashes erupted in the area post eid prayers.

One among the injured Sheraz Ahmad Naikoo (18) of Brakpora succumbed to injuries at Janglat Mandi hospital where he was taken along with other injured.

When contacted by GNS, Medical Superintendent (MS), District Hospital Anantnag, Dr Majeed Mahrib, confirmed the death and said that he had multiple injuries.

Despite repeated attempts, SSP Anantnag could not be reached for his comments over the youth’s death.

Sources said that Sheeraz had pellets in his face, neck, and chest fired from very close range.

However, Jammu and Kashmir Police refuted the news reports over the death of the youth. “As reported by certain sections of media that one person died in clashes with security forces at Anantnag is refuted,” said a spokesman.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that a hand grenade exploded resulting in the death of one Sheraz Ahmad s/o Gh Mohiuddin r/o Brakpora due to splinter injuries and his right hand got fully damaged. Further details are being ascertained.”

Meanwhile, protests also erupted after Eid prayers at Srinagar’s eidgah and some other places in the Valley including Kupwara. (With GNS Inputs)
