Srinagar: One day Sensitization Programme on Tobacco Control Laws and Measures was organized by J&K Voluntary Health Association (JK VHA) Srinagar in collaboration with Chief Education Officer, Srinagar at Government S.P. Higher Secondary School Srinagar today. The Programme was organized to create awareness about Tobacco Control Act-2003 and its guidelines prohibit sale/consumption of tobacco products within 100 yards of any educational institution.
The function was inaugurated by Additional District Development Commissioner, Mr. Showkat Ahmad Fazli and was chaired by Commissioner, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Mr. G.N. Qasba.
On this occasion, the Chief Education Officer, Srinagar formally declared all the Educational Institutions (both Government & Private) falling within Srinagar district as “Tobacco Free” to protect the younger generation from the growing menace of tobacco products.
Welcoming the participants Executive Director, JK VHA, Mr. A.M. Mir explained that tobacco free Educational Institutions would mean display of “Tobacco Free School” of “Tobacco Free Institution” board at prominent place on the boundary wall outside the main entrance, no sale of tobacco products shall take place inside the premises and within 100 yards from school/educational institution and mandatory signage in this regard shall be displayed prominently near the main gate and on outer boundary wall of school/institution, sign boards “No Smoking Area – Smoking here is an offence” of 60 cm x 30 cm size shall be displayed at prominent places, alongwith name, designation and contact phone number of authorized officer to whom report can be made in case of any violation.
He said that Srinagar is the second district after Budgam where such a bold step has been taken with the support of district administration and lot of efforts made by JK VHA and Drug and Food Control Organization in sensitizing the administrator of Education Department, officers’ incharge of public places, media personal and Law Enforcement Officers of Department.
Associate Professor Community Medicines SKIMS, Dr. Abdul Majid, HoD Radiation Oncology SMHS Hospital, Dr. S.U. Kuchay, Chairman JK VHA Prof. Dr. G.Q. Allaqaband, Food Safety Officer, Srinagar, Mr. Shabir Ahmad Lone and Senior Programme Manager JK VHA, Mr. A.K. Wani spoke on various topics.
Srinagar district is likely to declare all public places smoke free by the end of May this year so that the people particularly the passive smokers can enjoy smoke free clean environment and pollution free atmosphere in all public places, work places and educational institutions.
Chief Medical Officer, Srinagar, Principals of various Degree Colleges of Srinagar, Heads of various Schools, social activist and members of various civil societies also attended the function.
