Srinagar: As the dry spell continues to prevail in Jammu and Kashmir amid shivering cold, the local Meteorological department on Tuesday forecasted a major wet spell in the beginning of new year. The MeT informed that two back to back western disturbances are affecting the State from today evening.

A detailed weather advisory issued by Deputy Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad reads that rains and snow is expected at widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh.

Mukhtar said that there is possibility of rain and snow across Jammu and Kashmir, adding that the wet spell would also lead to disruption in surface transport on major highways.

“A fresh western disturbance will most likely affect the state of Jammu and Kashmir from evening of January 01 to 02,” Mukhtar said, adding that under the influence of this system, there is possibility of light rain or snow in plains and moderate rain or snow in upper reaches at widespread places across the State.

Mukhtar added that another western disturbance (WD) will most likely affect the state from evening of January 04 to 06, adding that similarly under its influence, there is possibility of moderate rain or snowfall at widespread places of Jammu and Kashmir including Ladakh, saying that there is possibility of heavy snowfall at isolated places with maximum intensity and spread on 04 and 05 January and gradual decrease thereafter.

“This will be the first major wet spell in the starting of new year for J&K,” Mukhtar said, while issuing a warning-cum-advisory for transport system, saying the weather system may lead to disruption of surface and air transportation like national highway (Srinagar-Jammu, Mughal Road) etc.

Mukhtar in a general warning informed that higher reaches of Kashmir, Ladakh and hilly area of Jammu would receive moderate snowfall during 04 and 05 January with possibility of heavy snowfall at isolated places.

The MeT director added that there will be significant fall in day temperature while as the night temperature would rise slightly. Notably, a week ago, the MeT had predicted rains or snowfall in the first week of January.

Mukhtar further said that the shivering temperature in Kashmir is there because of the long dry spell in Kashmir, saying that once the rains or snowfall would occur, there will be significant rise in temperature. (KNS)
