SHOPIAN — A Government Degree College in Shopian district was on Thursday named after a local slain Army soldier.

An official said that the Government Degree College was renamed as Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar Memorial Model Degree College Shopian.

The move has come after the government order that all the schools in Jammu and Kashmir will be renamed after the Indian Army soldiers, CRPF men, and Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel who were killed in the line of duty, while serving the nation.

An official said that the function to rename the college was held today at Government Degree College Shopian in which top officials were present.

He added that Imtiyaz Ahmad Thokar, a resident of Shadab Karewa Shopian, served in 1 Para and was among three soldiers killed during an encounter in Chinkipora village of Sopore in Baramulla district on February 23, 2010.

He further said that the family of the slain solider were also present on the occasion of renaming the college’s name.

It is pertinent to mention here that government has already constituted a committee to recommend the institutions to be named after slain soldiers, cops and other prominent personalities who had laid their lives in the line of duty.
