SRINAGAR — A Delhi court has scheduled a hearing on June 18 to consider the interim bail plea of Engineer Rashid, who seeks to take oath as an MP after his recent election victory.
Rashid, who is in custody over a 2016 Jammu and Kashmir militancy funding case, emerged victorious over former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Baramulla constituency during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, running as an Independent candidate.
Additional Sessions Judge, Chanderjit Singh set the date after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) requested more time to respond to Rashid’s application.
On June 7, the NIA noted that the official notification for the oath ceremony of the newly elected Lok Sabha members had not been published yet. The judge indicated that if the notification is issued before the next hearing, Rashid could file a plea to expedite the matter.
Rashid, imprisoned since 2019, faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) related to alleged militant funding. He is currently detained in Tihar Jail.
