Shopian is a historical town that has grown in prominence since the Mughal era. It was once called as ‘Sheen-e-Van,’ which means ‘snow forest.’ From 1872 until 1892 A.D., Shopian was one of six Wazarat headquarters in Kashmir.
The district is located in the foothills of the Pirpanchal range, and the most of its land is hilly. The district covers 30,741.6 hectares of land. It is 51 kilometres from the city of Srinagar. Shopian is an old town in Kashmir that, among other things, has historical significance since it is located on the ancient imperial road known as the Mughal Road.
Imam Shah-i-Hamadan had the honour of entering the Kashmir valley through Shopian to disseminate the word of Islam. At Khankah Pinjoora, the region enjoys the honour of housing the “Holy Relic” of Prophet Mohammad (SAW).
Shopian Town, the District Headquarter, is located at a height of 2146 metres above sea level, 51 kilometres from Srinagar and 20 kilometres from Pulwama. It has a long history of road communication with both Anantnag and Kulgam.
Currently, the Shopian comprises of nine Tehsils, eight CD Block Shopian and a portion of Block Keller, one Muncipal Committee with 13 Wards, 43 Patwar Halqas, and 231 inhabited villages, divided into two Assembly Constituencies.
According to the 2011 census, the district’s total population is 2.66 lacs, with 15% of the population being ST. The rural portions of the district are home to around 95% of the people. Literacy was determined to be present in 62.49 percent of the population.
The district is recognised as the state’s Apple Bowl because of its horticulture industry. The district has a lot of room for growth of the fruit business under various plans that can help the economy of not just this district, but the entire state.
The district is rich in scenic beauty, notably in regions like Sedow, Hirpora, and Keller, which are surrounded by lush green woods. The development of these villages/areas into tourist villages would enhance tourism in the district, allowing the residents to prosper economically.
