Chadoora Encounter: Youth succumbs to bullet injury

Srinagar: One youth was killed and seven others injured as government forces sprayed bullets and pellets on civilians who were protesting near Chadoora encounter site at Chadoora area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, witnesses and sources said.

A gunfight between rebels and government forces raged at Dorbagh village of Chadoora area today morning.

As the gunfight ensued, locals from several areas attempted to march towards encounter site but government forces stopped them, sparking off stone-throwing clashes.

As the clashes raged on, government forces according to sources and witnesses used teargas, pellets and also used bullets on the protesters pelting stones, resulting in injuries to seven civilians.

One of the injured civilians, Zahid Rashid (23-24) son of Abdul Rashid Ganai of Chadoora sustained bullet injury in his neck and he was immediately rushed to Srinagar’s SMHS hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

Soon after news about death of Zahid, who was lone brother of his five sisters, spread at SMHS, people staged protest while some youth also pelted stones on nearby Karan Nagar police station.

Police fired some teargas canisters, according to witnesses, but situation normalised instantly.

Meanwhile, a rebel was killed in the gunfight as the house, where the rebel was trapped, was blown up by the security forces.

The 10-hour-long gunfight ended with the death of a militant and injuries to a soldier, army spokesman said.

The spokesman, Defence PRO added that a weapon has also been recovered from the encounter site.
